Plan Ahead for Fall Travel

Click on the Fall Color Report for weekly updates.

Fall travel brings pleasant temperatures, beautiful foliage, and an array of harvest-themed events to the Shenandoah National Park region.

Autumn is both a beautiful and a busy time in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The annual show of fall colors brings many sightseers, especially during the last three weeks of October. Most visitors come to bask in the park’s undeniable beauty show. In early October, fall colors develop above 3,500 feet. The fall color display usually reaches peak at mid and lower elevations in the third week of October. However, there are so many variables that the exact dates of “peak” season are impossible to predict.

If you’d like to extend your fall getaway for a few days, the communities surrounding Shenandoah to the east and the west offer a wide choice of add-on experiences that are perfect for fall.

Some of our favorite seasonal things to do:

  • Gather some friends and make a date with one of our gorgeous vineyards, set amidst rolling hills and colorful landscapes.
  • Bask in the warm sunshine, and savor the crisp of leaves underfoot as you stroll to a downtown farmer’s markets or pick-your-own at a nearby orchard.
  • Enjoy pumpkin patches, corn mazes, farm animals, and hayrides. It’s a family affair, and fun for all ages.
  • Take a mountain biking excursion for some heart pumping challenge, while exhilarating in the breathtaking views.
  • Tour the area’s magnificent gardens and arboretums that are glowing in fall color.
